There are some things you will never, ever find in my kitchen. MSG-filled, super-salty boullion cubes or soup broth powder (Knorr or Maggi or Goya etc.) are some of them. They’re what I consider to be “weird chemical food” kinda like margarine or shortening (or Cool Whip and Cheez Whiz, if we’re naming names) which are two other things you won’t find in my kitchen, but that’s another discussion for another time.
Boullion is basically MSG + Salt + Preservatives.
I don’t care how convenient or how inexpensive they are. Using those preservative-laden cubes represent a level of cooking laziness even I can’t condone. And I’m super lazy, so that should tell you how abhorrent I actually find them.
Besides, I’m sensitive to heavy MSG-laden foods ’cause I usually start itching or really sleepy or mildly break-out in hives a few hours later. That and I grew up eating a low-sodium diet thanks to a family history of high blood pressure and heart disease, so all that sodium really ruins the “real taste” of food for me.
Besides, how much real nutritive value is in those lil suckers anyway?
That being said, I am not opposed to using the pre-packaged in a carton, organic, low-sodium, MSG-free liquid soup stock from Trader Joe’s in a pinch (I like cartons, because I try and stay away from aluminum cans as much as possible). But, that type of stock is totally different from boullion. Boullion (in my humble opinion) is evil.
Especially since it’s so easy to make stock from scratch. Sure it’s a little time consuming, but it’s not like you have to slave over a hot stove for hours, and it will make your home smell amazing. Bonus!
I’ll be posting my “Lazy Girl Turkey Stock” recipe tomorrow. I refer to it as a Lazy Girl recipe because it is perfect for those days you want to be somewhat productive, but would rather watch television or indulge in perfecting your couch potato ways. It’s so easy and stress-free and you don’t even need to defrost anything beforehand. All you have to be is awake to make it and I guarantee it will make you feel like a domestic goddess when you’re done. I hope you enjoy trying out my recipe.
Mucho love and laughter,
